The Question of God

Religion remains, to this day, a big part of people’s lives. It also remains irrelevant to a number of people, too. Nonetheless, we are all out in the world searching for answers, even when we’re not altogether aware that we are doing this.

Some people spend a great deal of time thinking about the question of god. In my case, I tend not to concern myself with deities of any kind. I suppose, in effect, this makes me agnostic: I neither believe nor actively disbelieve in the existence of god, or gods. Instead, I am concerned with getting through this life and making the most of the world. I follow the teachings of Buddhism and try to cultivate a sense of purpose through meditation practice and the mindfulness that comes with it.

This is not to everyone’s liking, but it works for me.

It may be that there is a god out there. If this is the case, I certainly hope that the reality of god is nothing close to the way ‘he’ is depicted in the sacred texts of the monotheistic religions. Even so, the whole matter just doesn’t spark my curiosity enough to spend a great deal of time thinking about it. God or no god, we only have this world and our knowledge of the universe that exists beyond it in our immediate grasp. Better enjoy it while it remains in reach, I say.
